September 30th : A Day for Truth and Reconciliation

 

The annual Orange Shirt Day – Every Child Matters on September 30th opens the door to global conversation on all aspects of the Indian residential schools. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects and legacy of the schools, a discussion all Canadians can tune into and create bridges with each other for truth and reconciliation. September 30th was chosen for Orange Shirt Day – Every Child Matters because it is the time of year in which children were historically taken from their homes and their families to Indian residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It is an opportunity for Indigenous peoples, local governments, schools and  communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

 

Here are some activities recognizing Orange Shirt Day in Windsor:

• Honour Walk & Community Gathering:

  • Date & Time: Wednesday, September 30, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

  • Venue: Jackson Park (125 Tecumseh Rd. E, Windsor, ON)

  • Details: Includes an honour walk, guest speakers, a sacred fire, drummers, food, and community activities organized by the Orange Shirt Day Committee. Free to attend. [1]

• Free Admission at Local Museums & Galleries:

  • Date & Time: Wednesday, September 30, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

  • Venues: Chimczuk Museum and Art Windsor-Essex (AWE) (401 Riverside Drive West, Windsor, ON)

  • Details: Both cultural spaces offer free admission. Visit the Original Peoples Culture and Legacy Gallery at the Chimczuk Museum or view the community display “Memengwaa / Butterflies” on the third floor of Art Windsor-Essex. [1, 2]

• University of Windsor Campus Observances:

  • Date & Time: Wednesday, September 30, 2026, starting at 9:15 AM

  • Venue: Campus starting at the Big Turtle Sculpture, concluding at Chrysler Tower

  • Details: Reflective campus walk and flag-raising ceremony, followed by the annual Orange Heart Photo gathering at Windsor Law at 1:00 PM
